A crowded boat ramp led to Sid Wilde of Robert, Louisiana catching what will end up being the Bussey Brake Reservoir record and the fourth largest largemouth bass ever caught in the state of Louisiana. He and his son, Jaylon, were going to call it a day around 5:30 PM on March 8, 2024, but when they saw a line of boats waiting to take out at the ramp, they decided to keep fishing until the ramp cleared out.
Wilde pitched his NetBait Paca Craw out on a G.Loomis rod with a Shimano reel and 50-pound Power Pro braid to a sunken tree top and let it go to the bottom. When the fish clamped down on it, the fight was on. After a short fight, he couldn’t believe what he landed. After having it weighed and measured by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the bass was 15.78 pounds and measured 27 inches in length with a 23 1/2-inch girth.
Bussey Brake is well known for its big bass potential as this is one of at least three 15-pounders caught out of the small impoundment. It also has great crappie fishing, which can make a for a busy place on the small 2,200-acre reservoir in the spring.
