Gear Review: Simms Fall Run Hoody

WHAT IS IT?

Simms Fall Run Hoody

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Primaloft Insulation is the foundation of this three-season, highly functional layering or stand-alone garment. Primaloft isn’t waterproof, but it’s water repellent to keep you warm even when it gets damp from rain or heavy activity (think landing a fish without a net or maneuvering a kayak). What else stands out is Primaloft 60g is extremely breathable for comfort and compressible for packing in a daypack or boat storage compartment. Primaloft also offers softness and provides superior warmth without adding bulk. Sizes: S-3XL. Colors: black, navy, rifle green, chestnut.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Wear it as a layering garment under a shell jacket, or as an outer garment for warmer days. Don’t mistake this as an insulated hooded jacket; it has the functions of both. You get a hood that provides insulated coverage around the neck, just like a hoody but even better. What’s really unique is the pressure release drawstring cord is conveniently located in the back of the hood, making the front of the hood free of getting drawstrings in the way. Two zippered handwarmer pockets double as storage to keep items from falling out. There’s also a zippered breast pocket for a cellphone or other quick retrieve items. Another nice touch is the internal quilting on upper front and back body that provides a smooth exterior for abrasion resistance when worn with waders or rain bibs.

HOW MUCH?

$169.95

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

I put my Fall Run Hoody through the test and what really stands out are the benefits of the Primaloft insulation noted above, as well as the water repellency. I can speak for both from experience. On a cool fall morning kayaking I found it easier to land a smallmouth without a net; I scooped it up, submersing the forearmed below the surface. Of course, I got wet but not cold, and the arm of the hoody dried quickly. So, I have a backup in case I do get wet from a rain shower or other close water activity.

The Fall Run hoody packs a heavyweight warmth-to-mass ratio for less bulk under bibs and waders. I’ve worn it with both and the lightweight doesn’t bind or add too much bulk with rain bibs or waders. It’s also ideal for kayaking; it doesn’t bind when seated in a kayak, and I have greater range of upper-body motion needed for casting, paddling and other close-quarters tasks. And best of all, my wife suggests I wear it on date nights, so what could be better than a hoody you can wear anywhere?
